About
About Me
My slogan is ‘Salt and Pepper but never Saccharin,’ which emphasises my commitment to tell stories with punch, bringing out the humour and the pathos of the Bible, and never, ever, to give easy answers or cute anecdotes.
My desire is to surprise people with the Bible: with its story arcs (which so unerringly end up in Jesus); with the telling of its less well-known stories; and with the novel retelling of its better-known ones. Above all, my aim is to point people to Jesus.
I am married to Stephen, and we have three girls, aged 7, 9 and 11. I am assistant minister at my local church and a free-lance writer and storyteller.
I have been a Christian since a very early age, having been blessed with Christian parents. With my family I worship at Cairns Road Baptist Church in Bristol.
I write on theological and Biblical themes, and on issues of justice. I am passionate about both, and feel them to be a core part of my response to, and journey with, God.
I mostly write short stories and poetry for adults, but I also write for children. I have several years’ experience of children’s work in my church.
I currently have two completed novels, which I must try to get around to finding a publisher for.
I write for Scripture Union for their WordLive on-line project. See my links page for more details. I also write Bible notes for Scripture Union in the UK and Rejoice in North America.
In 2008 I was awarded an MA in Missional Theology (Birmingham Christian College, affiliated to the University of Wales, Lampeter). My thesis was on the mission of the affluent church, and how it should be shaped by the existence of global poverty.
I am now studying part time for an MA in Biblical Studies, alongside ministerial training at Bristol Baptist College.
